Widows' and Orphans' Pension Contributions. married or single are required to contribute 4% of salary to a local scheme which provides for the payment of pensions to widows and orphans.

Vacation leave. Before the war, leave was granted at the rate of one day for each seven days of resident service and was ordinarily granted after 4 years service until the officer attained the age of 45 and completed 20 years Colonial Service. Thereafter leave accumulated at the rate of 2 days for each 11 days resident service and was ordinarily granted after 3 years service. In present circumstances it cannot be guaranteed that the rules regarding length of tours will be rigidly applied.

Passages. "Passage" in this memorandum means such passage by land, sea or air as the Government may direct. A free passage will be provided to Hong Kong. Free passages are normally granted once each way in respect of leave granted after each tour of servicc.

Free passages for an officer's wife, his sons who have not attained the age of 16, and his unmarried daughters who have not attained the age of 21, not exceeding four full fare passajos besides his own passage will be provided to and from Hong Kong once during each tour of service.

Courses of Instruction,

Taxation. Salaries paid in Hong Kong are subject to local taxation.

Officers may be required at any time during their service to attend prescribed courses of instruction.
